Lag Kilmichael
Originally built sometime in the 18th century, Lag Kilmichael is a small group of buildings nestling on a raised plateau about 40m above sea level on the west side of Carradale Glen.
The site is superbly located as it receives full sun in the summer thanks to the south facing glen and it is sheltered from the westerly winds by the hills in the winter.
Only when the winter wind comes down the glen from the north are we reminded how close to the Highlands we actually are.
The southerly aspect of the site makes for light mornings and late evenings in the summer and the total absence of light pollution gives superb star gazing opportunities on moonless nights. The Milky Way can be seen clearly from Lag Kilmichael without any help from binoculars or a telescope.
The local area is quiet farmland, the roads are little used and traffic jams (locally defined as more than two cars together) are a considerable rarity; when they do occur, they are usually caused by livestock of one form or another being ushered between grazing areas.
The beaches are clean and often deserted, the sea is crystal clear and the shallows are teeming with life.
Wildlife thrives here due to the warm climate and lack of interruption from mankind. Birdlife is especially diverse with many native and visiting species to be seen all year round.
Surely this place must be one of Scotland's best kept secrets...
